Off Track Machete

Benjamin crafted this machete as a proud celebration of New Zealand ingenuity, self-reliance, and practical heritage.

The long, sweeping blade is hand forged from 15N20 and 1084 Damascus steel , its random pattern shifting with every angle and light. The handle is shaped from kanuka — a dense, resilient native timber harvested from the regenerating bush right here at Mount Bruce where we live at the base of the Tararua Ranges. Kanuka has been valued for generations by Māori and early European settlers for its strength and durability.

Set into the handle is a piece of deep green Kawakawa Pounamu, discovered by Benjamin’s uncle and his crew while gold mining in Hokitika on the West Coast. This stone carries authenticated Ngāi Tahu provenance — a genuine taonga that brings the spirit and history of Aotearoa into the piece.
