Benjamin hand-forged this striking bushcraft knife using Damascus carbon steel. The handle, crafted from Northern Rata wood, was sourced from beneath the ash layer of Mount Taranaki. The bolster is made from wrought iron salvaged from a Victorian-era wagon wheel at the historic Opaki Racecourse, its fibrous grain etched to reveal Victorian blacksmith artistry.
Mount Taranaki's explosive history has repeatedly buried forests under ash and debris avalanches, preserving ancient wood beneath tephra layers. Its most significant recent eruption—the AD 1655 Burrell event—unleashed widespread pumice, lapilli, and ash across the region, while smaller ash falls occurred around AD 1755. Over centuries, these violent outbursts, combined with debris flows, have repeatedly entombed lowland and mid-slope forests, leaving organic relics like this Northern Rata buried and protected under volcanic layers for generations.
This one of a kind knife comes with a custom veg tanned leather belt sheath by Marisa. Hand embossed with a protective rune and gilded with pure silver leaf.
